Uncertainty

Updated: Dec 4, 2019

For some reason, the Lord likes to show me scriptural truths as I’m contemplating nature and science. Makes sense—God is the creator of nature and science and the author of truth.

In the last blog entry, I was sorting through the quantum principle of superposition. I intend to continue delving deeper into the quantum world by mentioning a related principle called “uncertainty.”

The uncertainty principle states that it is impossible to know the position and the momentum of a particle with absolute precision. The more accurately one of these values is known, the less accurately we know the other. Along with superposition, a particle exists in different realities simultaneously until it is looked at (measured); it then seems to collapse into one reality. Fun stuff, huh?

Neils Bohr, a pioneer of quantum physics, is credited with saying, “If quantum mechanics hasn’t profoundly shocked you, you haven’t understood it yet.” Quantum principles such as uncertainty and superposition radically altered the seemingly clean understanding of Newtonian physics. In Newtonian physics, things seemed to make sense. It seemed the natural laws of the universe were masterable… fully understandable. Quantum discoveries threw a monkey wrench into natural certainty.

Let me switch gears and say that if I feel that I’ve got a pretty clean handle on God and His truths, I probably don’t understand Him as well as I think I do. Since “superposition God” (see last blog entry) is divergent, His nature and the biblical truths that describe Him are also divergent and multi-faceted.

Some truths found in Scripture seem contradictory to our human minds, such as Ephesians 3:19 which says, “...know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge…” I can know His love and His salvation. Simple, clear. He is a good God.

And yet, I am to love Him and fear Him, receive His truth and His grace, His justice and His mercy. I love this about God because it leaves Him in charge and not me, allowing me to always step back in awe and wonder at the mystery in His presence as I enjoy the warmth and security of a personal relationship with Him. It keeps me humble and vulnerable. And shocked. Sometimes perplexed.

And, like in marriage--just when I think I’ve got Him all figured out…

I’m Dr. Jon Clark and have been in practice for 24 years. When I was 16, Jesus Christ changed my life. Everything good in my life has come from giving my life to Jesus. If you need a fresh start and would like to know Jesus, the Bible says that if you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, you will be saved. If you make this life-changing decision, give our office a call and let us know.
